When Beetles Fly

WHEN BEETLES FLY
Spectacle Rest Student Project

The artefacts are abstractions of the popular Japanese Rhinoceros Beetle from the Scarabaeidae(scarab) family. Gold circles that mirror each other on the top and bottom subtlely allude to the shine on beetles; as well as gold Egyptian Scarab Beetles that symbolise transformation. Placing your spectacles onto one of the artefacts removes its visual mimicry of a beetle; however, placing spectacles onto the other will bring the beetle to live with wings. This is meant to reflect how actions have different impacts in similar but different situations, making viewers aware of the transformative powers of our actions albeit good or bad.
